The construction of the first railway in Azerbaijan is directly related to oil transportation. In 1878, in order to improve oil transportation, the construction of the first railway in Azerbaijan began, and in January 1880, the Baku-Sabunchu-Surakhani line with a total length of 20km was put into operation. This line played an important role in oil transportation by connecting oil fields with kerosene plants and a seaport. It was in this way that the transportation of oil bu cisterns began for the first time in the world.
