The first solar powered satellite

The space industry began to use this technology to provide power for spacecraft in the 1960s.  Vanguard 1 was the first spacecraft to use solar cells. Weighing only 1.46 kg and 16.5 cm in diameter, this spherical satellite is the oldest man-made satellite still in orbit around the Earth.
