The energy efficient Al Bahar Towers, one of the wonders of modern architecture in Abu Dhabi, are both functional and eye-catching. These 25-storey, 145-meter-high towers are equipped with a protective layer inspired by the Mashrabiya style of historical Islamic architecture. This layer also acts as an umbrella, which is closed at nights and begins to open as the sun rises. Umbrellas contribute to reducing the heat generated by the sun by 50 percent, thus optimizing the operation of air conditioners. Carbon emissions are prevented by 40 percent.
