In January 1846, two wells were drilled in Bibiheybat under the direction of the director of the Baku Oil and Salt Mines, Lieutenant-Colonel of the Corps of Engineers Nikolay Voskoboynikov. One of the wells blew out and thus industrial oil production began.

Although it was claimed that the first industrial oil well in the world was drilled in Pennsylvania, USA, historical sources and documents from the Central State Archives of Russia show that this type of well was drilled 13 years ago in Bibiheybat, Azerbaijan.
