3 May is International Sun Day. The history of this day dates back to the 1970s, which was established to encourage people around the world to use renewable energy sources and take advantage of environmentally friendly solar energy.

In the modern world, solar energy is considered the most promising type of renewable energy and with the greatest potential. Solar panels are used to obtain electricity from the sun's rays, and solar collectors are used to provide heat and hot water.

According to the Irena`s Renewable Capacity Statistics 2024, in 2023 the installed capacity in this source in the world increased by 346 GW or 32.2 percent to 1 419 GW. This is 37% of the total renewable energy installed capacity.

In terms of solar energy installed capacity, China is in the lead with a result of 610 GW. Following China the top five includes the United States (139 GW), Japan (87 GW), Germany (82 GW), India (73 GW).

The economic potential of solar energy in Azerbaijan is 23,000 MW. The installed capacity of solar energy in our country is 281.9 MW. On 26 October 2023, the largest solar power plant in the Caspian region and the CIS, Garadagh SPP with a capacity of 230 MW, was commissioned. To this day at that station 137,3 million kWh.of green energy was produced.
