In 2019, the investment in renewable energy sources increased by 1.9% compared to 2018 (296.0 billion US dollars) and amounted to 301.7 billion US dollars.
In 2019, electricity production capacity of renewable energy sources increased by 8.4% (201 GW) compared to 2018 (2387 GW) and reached to 2588 GW. Solar energy accounted for 57.2% of the growth while wind energy for 29.8%. The growth in wind and solar energy accounted for 87% of the total growth.

The capacity of power on renewable energy sources excluding the hydropower was 1437 MW and increased by 14.8% compared to 2018 (1252 MW).
In 2019 hydropower capacity increased from 1135 GW by 15 GW (1.3%), amounting to 1150 GW, wind power capacity from 591 GW by 60 GW (10.2%), amounting to 651 GW, solar energy capacity from 512 GW by 115 GW (21.8%), amounting to 627 GW, bio-energy capacity from 131 GW by 8 GW (6.1 %), amounting to 139 GW. The geothermal power increased from 13.2 GW, reaching to 13.9 GW, concentrated solar thermal power reached to 6.2 by increasing from 5.6 GW and ocean power became 0.5 GW.
Hydropower capacity accounted for 44.4% of the investment power of renewable energy sources, wind energy for 25.2%, solar energy for 24.2%, bioenergy for 5.4% and other sources for 0.8%.

In 2019, the number of countries with renewable energy targets rose from 169 to 172, while the number of countries with renewable energy policies rose from 158 to 161. Denmark set a target to meet its primary and final energy consumption completely from renewable energy sources. The number of countries aiming to meet electricity from 100% renewable energy sources increased from 57 to 61.

The top five countries with renewable energy capacity, including hydropower, include China (789 GW), United States (282 GW), Brazil (144 GW), India (137 GW) and Germany (124 GW), and the five countries without hydropower include China, USA, Germany, India and Japan. China has 30.5% of the global renewable energy power and it also became the leader with new capacity of 67 GW commissioned per year. 22 GW was commissioned in the US, 13 GW in India, 8 GW in both Brazil and Japan.
In general, electricity produced by the end of 2019 at the expense of installed renewable energy accounted for about 27.3% of global electricity production, 58% of which was made up by hydropower, 22% by wind energy, 10% by solar energy and 8% by bioenergy. Hydropower accounted for 15.9% of the global power generation, wind power for 5.9%, solar power for 2.8% and bioenergy for 2.2%.
