Azerbaijan's Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met with Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Preparations for the 29th Session of the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), issues arising from the chairmanship of our country to this international event, as well as Azerbaijan's activities on the green energy transition were discussed at the meeting.

The Energy Minister gave detailed information about the reforms implemented in the direction of transformation of the traditional energy country of Azerbaijan into a producer and exporter of renewable energy, the broad use of green energy, the development of the electric power engineering sector in accordance with modern trends, new laws providing energy efficiency, the integration of up to 2 GW green power into the energy system by 2027, as well as plans for the implementation of the green energy corridor from the Caspian Sea to Europe and the activities implemented. Noting that our country joined a number of global Initiatives at the COP28, the Minister said that Azerbaijan aims to increase its contribution to the fight against climate change on a global scale, while continuing the implementation of the course on green development and accelerating decarbonization during the presidency of COP29. COP29 will be a platform to demonstrate Azerbaijan's role in the global energy transition process.

Executive Secretary Simon Stiell shared his views on the organization of the COP29, as well as the issues that should be addressed in the energy and environmental aspects, and expressed the Secretariat's support for the process through close cooperation. Simon Stiell said that Azerbaijan's experience in hosting many international events will contribute to the successful holding of COP29.

During the conversation, it was agreed to hold a joint seminar on the energy direction of the COP29.
