In 1971, geologists discovered a place near the Darvaza village in Turkmenistan, where underground gases accumulated. As a result of drilling, geologists found out an underground cavity, as a result of which the layer of earth collapsed, forming a large hole filled with gas. Experts decided to burn these gases in order to avoid the spread of gas that is dangerous to human health. The crater, thought to go out in a few days, has continued to burn continuously day and night since 1971. This gas crater is called the “Gates of Hell”.
