A memorial ceremony was held at the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy. A minute of silence was observed for the dear memories of the heroes, who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan at ceremony. Later Deputy Minister of Energy Samir Valiyev spoke about the crimes committed by the armed forces of the Soviet empire against civilians who protested for the freedom and independency of Azerbaijan 30 years ago, and about the killing of hundreds of innocent people. He described January 20 tragedy as one of the heroic pages of our national history.

The Deputy Minister noted that under these difficult and complex conditions, on January 21, 1990, National Leader Heydar Aliyev visited the permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow, demanding political and legal assessment of the massacres committed in Baku as a result of the military aggression of the Soviet troops and punishing the perpetrators. Thanks to the efforts and initiative of the National Leader, the truth about the January 20 tragedy was revealed and the political assessment of tragedy was given at the state level. Today, the necessary measures are being taken by the President of the country Ilham Aliyev to report on the January 20 tragedy to the international community, perpetuate the memory of our martyrs, strengthen the social protection of their families.

The government of Azerbaijan approached with high respect to the memory of our martyrs. Our heroic sons and doughters, who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our people, for the independence of our state, live in our hearts and will always live.

The memorial ceremony ended with a documentary film about January 20 tragedy.
