Videoconference was held with participation of co-chairs of Azerbaijan-UK Intergovernmental Commission Parviz Shahbazov and Graham Stuart
A videoconference was held with the participation of co-chairs of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov and Parliamentary under British Secretary of State, Minister for Exports Graham Stuart. The sides exchanged views on the activities of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission and bilateral energy cooperation.
The measures taken in Azerbaijan to fight COVID-19, Azerbaijan’s donation of $10 million to the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as the provision of humanitarian assistance to more than 30 countries suffering from the pandemic were discussed. The initiative of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ilham Aliyev to hold a special session of the UN General Assembly at the level of heads of state and government dedicated to the COVID-19 pandemic was brought to the attention.
Speaking about the impacts of pandemic on the global economy and the energy sector, especially on oil prices, Graham Stuart paid attention to thee cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UK in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Stressing the importance of the measures taken in "OPEC plus" format to stabilize the oil market, Minister Parviz Shahbazov said that for the first time in history, the decision on oil output cuts with large volumes is currently being implemented: “As a result, the price of oil has doubled and we continue to work on balancing the market. Stability in the market meets the interests of not only oil producers and companies, but also consumers. Azerbaijan's commitments are fulfilled within the high cooperation with BP and SOCAR.”
The Minister of Energy brought to the attention the work done in the field of renewable energy, the pilot projects implemented and planned auctions, as well as innovations related to the development of the legal base. The minister also highly appreciated BP's support for the improvement of the activities of small hydroelectric power plants in our country and the efficient use of the hydropower potential of rivers.
During the videoconference, date of the 4th session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission and the cooperation documents planned to be signed between the two countries were reviewed.
