The Cop29 chairmanship hosted a ministerial meeting on the energy initiatives of COP29 within the Energy Day of the International Climate Conference. Three important energy initiatives – COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, the COP29 Green Energy Pledge: Green Energy Zones and Corridors, and the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration were officially presented at the event.
COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge has committed to supporting the delivery of and ambitious scale-up to 1,500 GW of energy storage globally by 2030. The Pledge also includes a commitment to add or refurbish 25 million kilometres of grids globally by 2030, recognising the need to add or refurbish an additional 65 million kilometres by 2040. This pledge serves the purpose of ensuring the sustainability of global energy systems by promoting the use of renewable energy sources.
As part of COP29 Green Energy Pledge: Green Energy Zones and Corridors, it is planned to create Intercontinental and interregional green energy zones. This initiative is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and promotes economic development and supports the efficient use of resources.
The COP29 Hydrogen Declaration calls for strengthening global efforts for the scaling up of renewable, clean/zero-emission and achieving near-zero greenhouse gas emissions from hydrogen production. This initiative aims to stimulate the global market and support the development of international standards in the process of transition to a green economy.
Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said: "As the world enters a fateful stage on the climate and energy path, Azerbaijan's initiatives in the field of green energy zones, green energy corridors, energy storage, network infrastructure and hydrogen play a decisive role in achieving global climate goals. These initiatives not only elevate Azerbaijan to a leading position in the development and export of renewable energy, but also create unique opportunities to accelerate the development of clean energy on a global scale through large-scale transmission, coordination of remote potential energy sources with consumer centers, ensuring a balance between energy supply and demand, and integrating large volumes of green energy into the grid. COP29 calls on each of us to join these commitments, strengthen our energy transition and climate action, and unite in the name of building a sustainable future for our world. Let's turn COP29 into a landmark turning point and take our global climate and energy efforts to new heights.”
These initiatives, designed to support energy sector decarbonization efforts at the global level within the COP29 and aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with global climate targets, have been formed in cooperation with several international organizations, including IRENA, IEA, UNIDO, UNECE and UNESCAP.
More than 20 countries, 16 international organizations and financial institutions were represented at the Ministerial Meeting, including USA`s Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.
