Deputy Minister Samir Valiyev addressed the ministerial panel on Regional Security of the 6th Romanian International Gas Conference in Bucharest.
It was recalled that in July 2022, Azerbaijan and the European Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a strategic partnership in the field of energy, which laid the foundation for expanding the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) and increasing natural gas supplies. It was noted that since then, intensive contacts have continued with Azerbaijan, the European Commission, international financial organizations and potential buyers in Europe to guarantee gas supplies through the expanding infrastructure. The deputy minister also shared statistics on gas exports from Azerbaijan to Europe: "Azerbaijan exported 11.4 bcm of gas to Europe in 2022, and by the end of 2023 this volume will exceed 12 bcm." The Deputy Minister touched upon the future sources of gas supply in Azerbaijan.
It was noted that by 2028, large volumes of natural gas are expected to be delivered to the market from selected fields under development in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian Sea, including UMID, Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli gas projects, as well as from the exploited Absheron field. At the same time, it was noted that gas, which will be saved through Azerbaijan's green energy agenda and energy efficiency measures, will also be an important source of additional supplies: “By the end of 2027, it is planned to put into operation wind and solar power plants with a capacity of 1862 MW, which means the release of more than 1 bcm of gas.
It was also noted that Azerbaijan is determined to realize all its strategic goals related to its development as a green energy country, contribute to European energy security and green transition, and large-scale projects related to the production and export of renewable energy are being implemented for this purpose. At the same time, a platform for international cooperation in the field of green energy, covering four countries, was created at the initial stage. It was noted that work is underway to create transmission lines from wind power plants to be carried out, as well as a project to create a “green energy” corridor connecting the Caspian Sea with Europe via the Black Sea submarine cable. At the initial stage, it was noted that 4 GW of capacity is planned to be exported to Europe via the Black Sea, and 1 GW through Nakhchivan to Türkiye and Europe.
