COP31 Energy Agenda was discussed with IRENA

A meeting was held between Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

During the meeting, the results of the long-standing and productive cooperation between Azerbaijan and IRENA were highly valued. Francesco La Camera stated that Azerbaijan is one of the Agency’s most active and reliable partners and emphasised that the initiatives on energy storage systems, electricity grids and hydrogen put forward within the framework of COP29 have made an important contribution to the global energy agenda. 

Preparations for COP31 were discussed during the meeting. The parties exchanged views on organising events in Antalya dedicated to the implementation of the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge and the practical implementation of commitments under the Hydrogen Declaration, as well as on supporting the further advancement of these initiatives. The role of hydrogen in the energy transition and the growing importance of clean fuels in aviation and shipping were also highlighted.

During the meeting, IRENA proposed that Azerbaijan join the Global Offshore Wind Alliance. Given Azerbaijan’s significant wind energy potential in the Caspian Sea, the importance of this initiative for the country’s green energy agenda was noted.

The discussion also covered Azerbaijan’s role as Vice-President for the next term of the General Assembly of IRENA and future areas of cooperation with the Agency.
