Azerbaijan-EBRD energy cooperation was discussed
Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met with Harry Boyd-Carpenter, Managing Director of the Sustainable Infrastructure Group at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, who is visiting Azerbaijan within the framework of the WUF 13.
The meeting focused primarily on expanding cooperation in the energy sector, the development of renewable energy sources and projects related to regional energy connectivity.
The growing potential of Azerbaijan in the field of renewable energy and the country’s strategic targets in this direction were highlighted. It was noted that Azerbaijan plans to create 8 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035 for both domestic consumption and export purposes. In light of the increasing electricity demand from data centers, grid analysis is currently being conducted to facilitate the integration of additional renewable energy capacities into the national energy system in the coming years.
The parties also reviewed regional energy interconnector projects and cooperation opportunities with the Bank in this regard. The strategic importance of the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria, Caspian-Black Sea-Europe and Azerbaijan-Central Asia green energy corridors, as well as transmission line projects toward Türkiye via Nakhchivan and Armenia, was emphasized. It was noted that these projects play a strategic role both in expanding energy export opportunities and in strengthening regional energy security.
During the discussion, issues related to natural gas and the development of the Southern Gas Corridor were also addressed. Both sides expressed mutual interest in further expanding cooperation in the energy sector.
