Green partnership with EU and UK within COP was discussed in Brazil
Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, who is on a visit in Foz do Iguacu, held a number of meetings in order to participate in the energy talks held under the Brazil`s presidency to the G20.
At the meeting with Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, issues of natural gas supply, green energy partnership and cooperation within COP29 were discussed. It was noted that 3 out of the 15 initiatives put forward by the COP29 presidency cover the energy field. During the events planned jointly with the EU within the COP, including the high-level event on the Caspian-Black Sea-European Green Energy Corridor with the participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Georgia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, as well as companies and financial institutions, the sides exchanged views on the presentation of the preliminary report of feasibility study of the project. The current status of work on this corridor and the steps taken to expand the project by joining the countries of Central Asia were considered. It was reported that next year the project will be applied for the status of PMI (Project of Common Interests). The importance of these projects was also assessed in the context of the expected increase in electricity demand in Europe, energy security and energy transition, referring to the construction of the green energy infrastructure in Europe via Türkiye through Nakhchivan.
At the meeting with Ms. Kerry McCarthy, UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland the sides expressed satisfaction with the development of long-term strategic partnership between the two countries in the field of energy, which is diversified by the directions of green energy and decrabonization. In this regard, it was emphasized that the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of transition to clean energy has been implemented. The importance of the Shafag project implemented with bp in the decarbonization of the oil and gas industry of Azerbaijan was discussed.
At the meeting, COP29's energy initiatives on green energy zone and corridors, strengthening power grids and increasing energy storage capacities, and hydrogen development were also discussed. The UK has been invited to join these initiatives, which allow achieving the goal of switching to energy. In addition to participation in the events held on the energy day, the issues of financing necessary to advance the goals of the COP on climate and the green energy transition, as well as the cooperation opportunities with the UK on potential initiatives were discussed.
