Azerbaijan and Türkiye’s Energy Ministers discussed Green Energy Corridor Projects in Istanbul

A meeting was held in Istanbul between Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye, to discuss the implementation of the Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan)-Türkiye Energy Interconnector and the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria Green Energy Corridor projects.

During the meeting, the ministers expressed satisfaction with the continued development of the strategic energy partnership between the two countries across all areas of cooperation. They emphasized that the political will and strong support of the Heads of State have played a decisive role in advancing electricity projects comparable in strategic significance to the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) and TANAP projects. 

The parties reviewed the results of the studies conducted by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) regarding the Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan)-Türkiye Energy Interconnector. It was noted that, at the initial stage, the transmission of 1 GW of electricity from Nakhchivan to Türkiye represents a promising prospect. It was further underlined that, in the future, the project would facilitate the electricity transmission to Türkiye not only from generation sources in Azerbaijan but also from Central Asia. The prospects for the participation of Azerbaijani and Turkish investors in the project were also assessed.

The Ministers also discussed issues related to strengthening the contractual and legal framework for the Green Electricity Transmission and Trade Project between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye and Bulgaria, including the preparation of the feasibility study and the establishment of a Joint Venture. They agreed to accelerate the implementation of the project. In addition, information was provided on the positive findings of the feasibility study for the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor project, and cooperation opportunities with Türkiye on the project were assessed.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on Türkiye's hosting of COP31 and on further cooperation within the framework of the next meeting of the Azerbaijan-Türkiye Energy Forum.
