Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov attended the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit organized by Masdar of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During the summit, the Deputy Minister spoke at a panel discussion titled Concrete Steps for Decarbonization.

Elnur Soltanov shared his views on the role of COP29 in the decarbonization process, Azerbaijan’s policies in this area, and the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to the import of carbon-intensive products. Referring to President Ilham Aliyev’s position that fair energy transition and decarbonization measures should not hinder development, the Deputy Minister stated that strengthening incentive mechanisms is more effective than mandatory measures in this process. Elnur Soltanov emphasized that Azerbaijan’s approach to carbon taxation is based on implementing decarbonization measures and related expenditures domestically rather than at the border, ensuring that the additional value created directly contributes to the national economy.

It should be noted that Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is a global platform that brings together representatives from governments, businesses, financial institutions, and civil society. It is one of the most important events organized by the UAE to accelerate sustainable development.
