Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and UN Deputy Secretary General and Executive Director of the Environment Program (UNEP) Inger Anderson held a meeting. Many fields of cooperation between UNEP and Azerbaijan, including cooperation issues within COP29, were discussed at the meeting.

As an oil and gas country, Azerbaijan's activities on green energy and climate, as well as its accession to the Global Methane Promise were highly appreciated, and it was noted that the chairmanship of the COP29 event turned our country into the center of the fight against climate change. During the conversation, the initiatives and priorities included in the activity agenda of the COP29 chairman, as well as the activities to be implemented jointly with international partners on the energy aspect were discussed. The projects that ensure the transformation of Azerbaijan into the renewable energy sector, as well as the green energy corridors connecting producers and consumers of green energy in different regions and the contribution of interconnectors to the energy transition were discussed. The sides exchanged extensive views with UNEP on the development of cooperation on the reduction of methane emissions, the development of an agro-photovoltaic system in our country, the transition to low-waste and waste-free electric transport project.

At the meeting, along with COP, the role of World Environment Day to be held in Baku in 2026 was also touched upon in strengthening Azerbaijan-UNEP relations.
