Solar radiation measurement is necessary for the solar power plants construction. A correct radiation assessment not only allows a comparatively accurate calculation of the amount of electricity to be produced, but also increases the reliability of solar energy projects.

The amount of solar radiation per area is characterized by the amount of radiation per unit time per 1 square meter of horizontal surface, the amount of flat radiation per unit time per perpendicular surface, and the amount of scattered radiation. These indicators are measured at Solar Monitoring Stations using a pyranometer, pyrheliometer, and shaded pyranometer.

Solar Monitoring Stations were used in Azerbaijan in such solar power plants as Gobustan, Samukh, Surakhani, Pirallahi, Khal-Khal. In 2021, 2 Solar Monitoring Stations were installed on the territory of Zangilan and Jabrayil districts.
