D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8)
General Information
· The D-8 was officially established by the Declaration adopted at the Summit Meeting held in Istanbul on 15 June 1997.
· The Organization has nine Member States: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Türkiye.
· The Headquarter of the Organization is located in Istanbul, Türkiye.
· Since 1 January 2026, the Secretary-General of the Organization has been Sohail Mahmood (Pakistan).
· The D-8 holds Observer Status at the United Nations General Assembly.
· The D-8 has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with, IDB, ECO, BSEC, and others.
Cooperation with Azerbaijan
At the 11th D-8 Summit, held in Cairo on 19 December 2024, the Republic of Azerbaijan joined the D-8. Thus Azerbaijan became the first non-founding country to join the Organization since its establishment.
· On 4 March 2025, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Isiaka Abdulqadir Imam, Secretary-General of the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8).
· Within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), held in Baku from 17 to 22 May 2026, the D-8 High-Level Energy and Urban Dialogue was organized on 19 May.
· Within the framework of Baku Energy Week 2026, held in Baku from 1 to 3 June 2026, the First Meeting of the D-8 Energy Ministers took place on 1 June.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Baku Declaration on Energy Cooperation was adopted.
D-8 Energy and Climate Centre
· At the 50th Session of the D-8 Commission, held in Cairo on 15-16 December 2025, a decision was adopted to establish the D-8 Energy and Climate Centre, the D-8 Transport Centre of Excellence, and the D-8 Media Centre of Excellence in Azerbaijan.
· In connection with the establishment of the Centre, a Draft Charter has been prepared, based on the Concept Paper adopted at the 50th Session of the D-8 Commission, held in Cairo on 15-16 December 2025. The Draft Charter defines the status, objectives, functions, governance mechanisms, and areas of activity of the D-8 Energy and Climate Centre.
