The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was established by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 1947. UNECE is one of the five Regional Commissions of the UN. The main purpose of UNECE is to help member countries (including 56 countries of Eastern and Western Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States and North America) that are not already members of the European Union to integrate into the European economy.
UNECE has eight sectoral committees:
●    Committee on Environmental Policy
●    Inland Transport Committee
●    Conference of European Statisticians
●    Committee on Sustainable Energy
●    Committee on Trade
●    Forestry and Timber Committee
●    Committee on Housing and Land Management
●    Committee on Economic Cooperation and Integration

Azerbaijan has been a member of the Commission since July 30, 1993. The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan cooperates with the Committee on Sustainable Energy.
In order to carry out the activities of UNECE’s Committee on Sustainable Energy, six expert groups and one center have been established in the committee. These include:
●    Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency (GEEE)
●    Group of Experts on Renewable Energy (GERE)
●    Expert Group on Resource Management (EGRM)
●    Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane (CMM)
●    Group of Experts on Cleaner Electricity Systems (CES) from fossil fuels
●    Group of Experts on Gas (GEG)
●    Gas Center

A representative from the Ministry of Energy participated at the 4th International Forum of Energy for Sustainable Development, held in Tbilisi, Georgia, on September 17-19, 2013, and organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). 
On October 23-25, 2013, in Astana, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Energy participated in the Joint National Seminar and Stakeholder Meeting on the Promotion and Financing of Innovative Green Technologies, within the technical cooperation project of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The Ministry of Energy was represented at the 24th Session of the Steering Committee on the Energy Efficiency 21 Program, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 12-13, 2013.
On November 4-6, 2014, the 5th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development was held in Tunisia, organized by the Sustainable Energy Committee of the European Economic Commission (UNECE). A representative from the Ministry of Energy participated at the forum.
A workshop and study tour on “Inter-regional Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Projects and Politics” was jointly organized by UNECE and the Israel Government on February 8-12, 2015, in Israel. The purpose of the workshop was to increase the share of renewable energy resources in the production of electricity and to inform the participants about how to use energy efficiently. A representative of the Ministry of Energy attended the seminar.
The 7th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development by UNECE was held in Azerbaijan on October 18-21, 2016. During the session, discussions and meetings within the forum, the Power Engineering Department of the Ministry participated and made a presentation on “National Power Grid Infrastructure, Existing Development Plans  and AN Overview of National Power Markets.”  
On June 11, 2017, Astana hosted the 8th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development, as well as a ministerial conference. A delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Energy attended the meeting.
On November 12-15, 2018, the 9th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development and a ministerial conference were held in Kiev, Ukraine. A representative of the Ministry of Energy attended the event.
On 22-25 September 2020, the "UNECE 2020 Energy Week” was held in virtual format. Within the framework of the event, the representative of the Ministry of Energy participated in the sessions of expert groups.
On 22-23 October 2020, a representative of the Ministry of Energy attended the 6th meeting of the Working Group on mutual links between Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystems of UNECE, which was organized in virtual format.
