The United Nations’ Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)
The United Nations’ Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) was established in 1947. It has 53 members and 9 associate members. The Executive Secretary of the organization is Ms Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana from Indonesia.
The purpose of the organisation is to promote economic cooperation among its member countries, to implement results-oriented projects, to provide technical assistance and to strengthen its capacities. Energy is one of nine focuses of UNESCAP.
Azerbaijan has been a member of the organization since July 31, 1992. The Republic of Azerbaijan regularly prepares and submits the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific to the organization.
On February 2, 2016, as part of the visit of UN Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of Asia and UNESCAP, Shamshad Akhtar, to Azerbaijan State Economic University, a session was held on the prospects of the economic situation in the region and the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A representative of the Ministry of Energy attended the event.
The 73rd session of UNESCAP was held on May 15-19, 2017, in Bangkok, Thailand. A delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Energy attended the meeting.
Within the UNESCAP, the 10th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development and the 2nd session of the Committee on Energy of UNESCAP were held in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 7-11, 2019. A representative from the Ministry of Energy attended the event.
On 24-26 February 2021, the third session of the Committee on Energy was held in virtual format. Representatives of the Ministry of Energy took part in the event dedicated to "Energy transformation for a greener, more sustainable and inclusive energy future in Asia and the Pacific".
