The European Union's Eastern Partnership Initiative
The EU's Eastern Partnership initiative was put forward by Poland and Sweden at a seminar in Prague in May 2009. The Eastern Partnership (EP) initiative includes the proposals of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova (referred as 'Eastern Partners') and to continue in multilateral development. Within the EP new cooperation agreements were considered on deep and comprehensive Free Trade Areas, programmes financed by the EU, mobility and security pacts, visa-free travel, accession to the EU labour market, approximation to EU legislation and other standards. One of the platforms established for carrying out discussions within the multilateral format of EP is one on energy security. Meetings are held within the framework of this platform on a regular basis.
Participating in Sustainable Energy Week, held in Brussels on April 12-14, 2011, within the EP programme of the European Union, a report on the Azerbaijani electro-energy system was presented at the 3rd Platform on Energy Security.
A seminar of energy regulators of EaP countries, held on May 30-31, 2012, in Vienna, Austria, within the framework of the 3rd Platform for Energy Security of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) was attended by a representative of the Ministry of Energy.
The 14th Meeting of the 3rd Multilateral Platform for Energy Security of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) programme of the European Union (EU) was held on December 9-12, 2015, in Brussels, Belgium. A representative of the Ministry of Energy attended the meeting.
On May 15-19, 2017, the 6th Annual Seminar of Energy Regulators within the Energy Security Platform was held in Kiev, Ukraine, at which the Ministry of Energy was represented.
On September 20, 2017, a workshop on ‘Certification of Civil Servants: Problems and Prospects’ was organised by the European External Action Service and the State Examination Center of the Republic of Azerbaijan within the Eastern Partnership in Baku. The experiences of the European Union's Eastern Partnership countries in public administration reforms were shared at the event, in which representatives from the Ministry of Energy participated.
The First Meeting of the Energy Panel was held in Brussels within the framework of the renewed multilateral cooperation dimension of the Eastern Partnership programme on June 5, 2018. A representative of the Ministry of Energy participated in the meeting.
The Second Meeting of the Energy Panel took place in Brussels on November 27, 2018. The meeting was dedicated to energy connectivity, liquefied natural gas (LNG) prospects and decarbonization of the energy sector in the EP region. A representative from the Ministry of Energy attended the meeting.
A meeting of countries’ energy ministers from the Eastern Partnership was held in Bucharest, Romania, on April 2, 2019. Azerbaijan was represented by Deputy Minister of Energy, Elnur Soltanov, at a meeting held within the chairmanship of Romania in the Council of the European Union. As the Eastern Partnership programme was celebrating its 10th anniversary, the meeting focused on discussions on future cooperation perspectives in the field of energy, the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Network within the Eastern Partnership and energy infrastructure – natural gas and electricity projects and energy efficiency.
On June 17, 2019, the 3rd Meeting of the Energy Panel was held in Brussels, Belgium, within the 3rd Platform of the European Union Eastern Partnership programme on ‘Connectivity, Energy Efficiency, Environment and Climate Change’. A representative of the Ministry of Energy attended the meeting.
On September 20, 2019, the 3rd Symposium of the Regional Network on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Markets was held in Kiev within the Eastern Partnership programme. Representatives from the Ministry of Energy attended the symposium.
On October 17-18, 2019, the 4th Meeting of the Energy Panel was held in Vilnius, Lithuania, within the European Union Eastern Partnership programme. A representative from the Ministry of Energy attended the meeting.
On November 26, 2019, in Brussels, Belgium, a meeting of the 3rd Platform on ‘Connectivity, Energy Efficiency, Environment and Climate Change’ was held within the European Union Eastern Partnership programme. A representative from the Ministry of Energy attended the meeting.
